Capturing the Beauty of Maternity
A Photoshoot at Schalisee
As an enthusiastic photographer I love maternity photoshoots, there is nothing more fulfilling than capturing the magic and anticipation of bringing a new life into the world. Last week, I had the pleasure of working with Rafael and Ines, a lovely couple expecting their first child. Our session took place at the little lake Schali in Täsch, a location that offered a a variety of backdrops to celebrate this beautiful time.
All the pictures you will find at the end of this blogpost.
The Perfect Setting: Schalisee
Schalisee is truly a gem for photography. Nestled in Täsch, this location host a stunning variety of natural landscapes, all within a short walking distance of each other. We began our session near a little river, next to a little forrest. This spot was ideal for capturing intimate and playful moments between Rafael and Ines as they celebrated their growing family.
From there, we moved to a grassy field, where the soft, natural light added a warm, ethereal quality to the photos. The final location was the beautiful lake itself, with the majestic Breithorn mountain in the background. Each of these settings provided a unique backdrop, enhancing the beauty of Rafael and Ines' connection and the excitement of their upcoming arrival.
Focusing on What Matters
During maternity photoshoots, my primary goal is to capture the essence of this special time. With Rafael and Ines, I focused on highlighting their bond and the anticipation they felt for their baby. I really enjoy to get to know Rafael & Ines a bit better and hear about their love story. I also made sure to focus Ines' beautiful baby bump, which is such a significant part of the pregnancy experience. I wish every expecting mother would have the opportunity to look back and remember this incredible journey.
To achieve this, I used a mix of close-up shots and wider landscape compositions. The close-ups allowed me to capture the couple’s expressions and the tender moments they shared, while the broader shots showcased the stunning surroundings of Schalisee, creating a perfect blend of intimacy.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot
One of the most common questions I get from my clients is about what to wear for their photoshoot. My advice is always to choose neutral, natural colors that complement the landscape and keep the focus on you and your beautiful baby bump. For Rafael and Ines, we chose outfits in soft, white & beige tones, which not only looked great on them but also against the backdrop of Schalisee. I love the dress of Ines, and how it complemented the beautiful baby belly. Rafaels selection underlines how proud he is of becoming a father. Their clothing also added a timeless quality to the photos.
It's also essential to coordinate outfits with your partner. Matching in tone and style helps create a cohesive look and keeps the photos visually appealing. For example, if one of you is wearing a light, flowy dress, the other could wear a complementary shade in a more fitted style. The goal is to create harmony in the images without drawing attention away from the main focus — the connection between you and your partner, and your shared anticipation of your little one.
The Art of Posing
Many of my clients worry about posing and how they will look in their photos. Don't worry! I know it is easier said as done but I got you! Remeber: it’s my job to guide you through the poses and make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed. With Rafael and Ines, I provided simple directions and encouraged them to interact naturally. I believe the best photos come when my clients feel at ease and allow their true emotions to shine through.
During our session, I suggested a variety of poses, from gentle embraces to playful moments that highlighted their excitement. I also encouraged them to move, walk, and even dance a little, which brought out natural smiles and laughter. These candid moments often turn out to be the most cherished because they reflect the true essence of the couple’s relationship and the joy of expecting a new addition to their family.
Why Maternity Photos Are So Important
Maternity photoshoots are more than just a photography session — they are a celebration of life, love, and new beginnings. For many mothers, pregnancy is a time of transformation, both physically and emotionally. Capturing these moments is a way to honor this period of growth and change.
Looking back at your maternity photos, you will be reminded of the anticipation and love that filled your heart as you awaited the arrival of your little one. These images become cherished keepsakes that tell the story of the start of your family, preserving memories that you and your child will treasure forever.
